Diaphragm

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located beneath the lungs, separating the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. It plays a crucial role in respiration by contracting and flattening during inhalation, which increases lung volume and draws air in. During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes, allowing the lungs to expel air. The diaphragm is innervated by the phrenic nerve and also assists in other functions like coughing and sneezing. Its movement is essential for effective breathing and maintaining pressure in the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
